Ajith’s Gambler Movie Review

What is the film about?
The film is about planning and pulling off a heist and it’s after effects.
Interesting, so how is the film?
While the premise is interesting the execution leaves a lot to be desired. The whole set up for the heist drags and also it takes up the entire first half of the movie. Not only that the heist itself looked pretty silly and was done in an almost childlike manner.
So it’s not good after all?
Well not really the second half of the film has few moments that are bound to attract the viewers depending on their exposure of films of this genre from the west. If one isn’t familiar with films of these genres the second half would be pretty satisfactory barring the songs which seem forced. For those who have even a small idea of this genre everything is predictable till the end, including the twist.
I am aware of the genre clichés so why should I watch it?
Then that leaves one with only one option and reason to watch the film, the hero or rather here the villain of the film Ajith. He is the only reason one would want to watch the film as he delivers a terrific performance. Again he comes into his own from the scene before interval of the film and just takes off from there till the end. If one is forced to watch the film it’s just for him.
What about the others?
Among the rest none have full fledged characters with Arjun being restricted to few scenes only. Trisha too has very little to do and is irritating in some of the scenes. Others are the usual gang that is present in A Venkat Prabhu film and they are just about passable. Lakshmi Rai gets a character that’s more interesting than Trisha and she does ok.
How is the direction?
The director seems to be an ardent fan of hero Ajith and designs a film just o showcase his favorite actor in a new light. He succeeds in doing that but as a director he has filed with the film in that the screenplay is pretty poor. Also there are lots of scenes that are lifted form various movies of the west. Over all not his best film and the direction could have been a lot better.
What is the film technically?
The film is inconsistent as far as the look of the film goes with some scenes looking very cheap. The DI could have been better in places it spoils the frame as its overdone. Music by Yuvan Shankar Raja is good but the placement of the songs is wrong and therefore lacks the impact. Background music is superb.
Bottom-line:
1. It’s a good watch if you are unfamiliar with the genre.
2. A decent watch if you are familiar with the genre and like the actor.
3. If you don’t fall into either 1 or 2 wait to watch it on a DVD
Rating: 3/5
